First Class Dec. - Beginning Crochet

Chain Necklace
with Star Flower
Why teach kids to crochet? Crochet or any craft can be an ego booster. It teaches the individual that they are in control of what they do and if they only try they can accomplish a lot.

  • First off, no more than 4 kids per teacher. Tried 6 and it was a bit over whelming.
  • Classes should be no longer than 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours long.
  • Use bright colored acrylic yarn, not fuzzy. Red Heart, worsted, medium, #4 is a good yarn.
  • Use hook size, H, I, or J.

Each child is going to have a different skill level. In my first class I had a

Ladder Scarf
few that caught on to how to use a hook quickly and some I taught how to

finger crochet. What ever works and helps them to feel like they
accomplished something.

We all start with the chain stitch. So good first projects are:
  • Friendship bracelets - chain stitch
  • Chain necklaces - chain stitch (I provided the flowers to go on them)
  • Hair Scrunchies  - slip stitch, single crochet, & chain stitch
  • Ladder Scarf - chain stitch & double crochet
Everyone goes home with a finished project the first day.

Scrunchie
At the end of the class the projects were:
  • 1 - 3 strand Chain Necklace and a Hair Scrunchie
  • 1 - 2 strand Chain Necklace and a started Hair Scrunchie
  • 1 - 2 strand Chain Necklace and a started Ladder Scarf
  • 1 - 1 strand Chain Necklace and a Friendship Bracelet
